Guidelines for Thesis Defense – PPGCTA and guidelines for submitting the final version to the PPG

All graduate students seeking the title of Doctor Scientiae must prepare and defend a thesis and be approved in it.

To obtain the degree, the doctoral student must:
⇒ Complete a minimum of 12 (twelve) credits;
⇒ Meet the English language requirement;
⇒ Attend the course TAL 797 – Seminars for 2 (two) academic terms and obtain a grade of S (satisfactory);
⇒ Complete two academic terms of Teaching Internship (TAL 776, TAL 777, TAL 778 – 1, 2 or 3 credits respectively), totaling a maximum of 3 credits (Required only for CAPES doctoral scholarship holders);
⇒ Have the research project registered with the Graduate Program (PPG);
⇒ Be approved in the Qualification Exam.


Only doctoral candidates who have met the following requirements may submit to thesis defense:
⇒ Submit to PPGCTA proof of acceptance of at least one (1) article related to the thesis topic in a Qualis journal (Food Science Area) ranked A1, A2, A3, or A4, with the advisor as corresponding author, or proof of at least one (1) patent application filed with INPI related to the thesis topic, coordinated by the advisor (Patent application accepted only for students admitted from 2023/2 onwards);
⇒ Submit to PPGCTA proof of at least two (2) participations in national and/or international events with presentation of work as first author (Required only for students admitted from 2023/2 onwards);
⇒ Submit to PPGCTA the similarity report of the thesis (If the similarity exceeds 40% overall and/or 5% from a specific source, a justification must accompany the report. This report is generated by the advisor).

Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities
⇒ Schedule the defense date with the PPGCTA office;
⇒ Book the room/generate a link (for online defense) – Note: The defense must be recorded, and the recording sent to PPGCTA via email (tca@ufv.br);
⇒ Submit to PPGCTA proof of acceptance of at least one (1) article related to the thesis topic in a Qualis journal (Food Science Area) ranked A1–A4, with the advisor as corresponding author, or proof of a patent application filed with INPI (minimum 5 days before the defense date);
⇒ Submit to PPGCTA proof of at least two (2) participations in national/international events with presentation as first author (minimum 5 days before the defense date);
⇒ Deliver thesis copies to the examination committee members.


Advisor Responsibilities
⇒ Generate and send the thesis similarity report to PPGCTA (tca@ufv.br);
⇒ Register the examination committee for the thesis defense in the Academic Postgraduate System (AcademicoPG);
⇒ Submit the defense-related forms to the PPGCTA office, signed after the defense.


PPGCTA Coordinator and Office Responsibilities
⇒ Review and approve the defense committee registered by the advisor in the Academic Postgraduate System;
⇒ Prepare participation certificates and declarations when requested;
⇒ Forward the defense documents to the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies.

Examination Committee

The thesis defense committee must be composed of at least 5 (five) full members and 2 (two) alternate members.
Requirement: Among the full members, at least 1 (one) must be external to the graduate program and 1 (one) must be external to UFV. Neither of these members may belong to the student’s Advisory Committee.

Documents Required for Thesis Defense

⇒ Form 7 – Defense Minutes (obtained from the Academic Postgraduate System);
⇒ Authorization form for electronic publication in UFV’s digital library (obtained from the Academic Postgraduate System);
⇒ Defense update protocol (obtained from the Academic Postgraduate System after defense data is updated – PPGCTA office);
⇒ Email addresses of members participating via videoconference.

After the defense, all documents must be submitted by email (tca@ufv.br) to the PPGCTA office, duly signed.

Defense

On the scheduled day and time, the student must appear before the examination committee to defend the thesis.
The student begins by presenting the thesis work.
After the presentation, committee members ask questions and provide comments and suggestions.

Starting October 28, 2024, all thesis and dissertation submissions must be done exclusively online through the AcademicoPG System. Printed versions will no longer be accepted.
Within a maximum period of 90 (ninety) days from the date of the defense, the student must submit the final version of the thesis directly into the AcademicoPG system.
