Guidelines for Dissertation Defense – PPGCTA and guidelines for submitting the final version to the PPG

All graduate students pursuing the title of Magister Scientiae must prepare and defend their thesis and be approved in the process.

To obtain the degree, Master’s students must:
⇒ Complete a minimum of 12 (twelve) academic credits;
⇒ Fulfill the English language requirement;
⇒ Enroll in and receive a satisfactory grade (S) in the course TAL 797 – Seminars, for two academic semesters;
⇒ Have their research project officially registered with the Graduate Program (PPG).

Defense Scheduling

The defense must be scheduled through the online form, which must be completed with all the required information.

After completing the form, the PPGCTA must be notified by email (tca@ufv.br) regarding the defense scheduling.

Note: The documents listed below must be attached to the defense scheduling form:

⇒ Proof of submission of at least one (1) article related to the dissertation topic to a Qualis journal (Food Science Area) ranked A1, A2, A3, or A4, with the advisor listed as the corresponding author; or proof of at least one (1) patent application filed with the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), related to the dissertation topic and coordinated by the advisor (Patent application accepted for students admitted from 2023/2 onward);

⇒ Proof of participation in at least one (1) national and/or international scientific event with presentation as first author, with the advisor’s participation (Only for students admitted from 2023/2 onward);

⇒ Dissertation similarity report (If overall similarity exceeds 40% and/or 5% for a specific source, a justification for the similarity must be submitted together with the report) (This report is generated by the advisor).

The dissertation defense committee must be created in the Graduate Academic System (AcademicoPG) (advisor/student).

Examination Committee

The committee must be created in the Graduate Academic System (AcademicoPG).

Committee composition: At least three (3) full members and two (2) alternate members.

Requirement: Among the full members of the dissertation examination committee, at least one (1) member must be external to the program and must not belong to the student’s Advisory Committee.

Documents for the Dissertation Defense

The documents required for the defense are:

⇒ Form 7 – Defense Minutes (obtained from the Graduate Academic System);

⇒ Authorization Form for electronic publication in the UFV Digital Library (obtained from the Graduate Academic System);

⇒ Defense Update Protocol (obtained from the Graduate Academic System after updating the defense information);

Defense Procedure

At the scheduled date and time, the student must appear before the committee to defend their thesis.
The defense begins with the student presenting their work.
After the presentation, the committee members ask questions and offer feedback and suggestions.

Post-Defense Procedures (Submission of the Final Version of the Dissertation)

Within a maximum period of ninety (90) days from the date of the defense, the student must submit the final version of the dissertation directly in the AcademicoPG system.
