Guidelines for Dissertation Defense – PPGCTA and guidelines for submitting the final version to the PPG

All graduate students pursuing the title of Magister Scientiae must prepare and defend their thesis and be approved in the process.

To obtain the degree, Master’s students must:
⇒ Complete a minimum of 12 (twelve) academic credits;
⇒ Fulfill the English language requirement;
⇒ Enroll in and receive a satisfactory grade (S) in the course TAL 797 – Seminars, for two academic semesters;
⇒ Have their research project officially registered with the Graduate Program (PPG).


Eligibility Requirements for the Thesis Defense
A student is only eligible to defend their thesis after meeting the following requirements:
⇒ Submit to PPGCTA proof of submission of at least one article related to their thesis topic to a Qualis journal (in the Food Science area) rated A1, A2, A3, or A4, with the advisor listed as corresponding author, or at least one patent application filed with the INPI related to the thesis topic, coordinated by the advisor (Patent requirement applicable for students who enrolled starting from the second semester of 2023);
⇒ Submit to PPGCTA proof of at least one participation in national and/or international scientific events, presenting the work as first author with the advisor’s participation (Required only for students who enrolled from the second semester of 2023);
⇒ Submit to PPGCTA the similarity report of the thesis. If similarity exceeds 40% overall and/or 5% from a specific document, a justification must accompany the report (to be generated by the advisor).

Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities
⇒ Schedule the defense date with the PPGCTA office;
⇒ Reserve a room or generate an online meeting link for the defense – Note: The defense must be recorded, and the recording must be emailed to PPGCTA at tca@ufv.br;
⇒ Submit proof of submission of an article or patent request (as detailed above) at least five days prior to the defense date;
⇒ Submit proof of participation in scientific events (as detailed above) at least five days prior to the defense date;
⇒ Deliver copies of the thesis to all committee members.


Advisor Responsibilities
⇒ Generate the thesis similarity report and send it to PPGCTA (tca@ufv.br);
⇒ Set up the defense committee in the Graduate Academic System (AcademicoPG);
⇒ Submit the completed and signed thesis defense forms to the PPGCTA office after the defense.


PPGCTA Coordinator and Office Responsibilities
⇒ Verify and approve the committee proposed by the advisor in the Graduate Academic System;
⇒ Prepare certificates and declarations of participation, if requested;
⇒ Forward the defense documents to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.

Thesis Defense Committee

The thesis defense committee must consist of at least three (3) regular members and two (2) alternate members.
Requirement: At least one (1) of the regular members must be external to the program and not part of the student’s advisory committee.

Required Documents for the Defense

⇒ Form 7 – Defense Minutes (available in the Graduate Academic System);
⇒ Authorization form for digital publication in UFV’s digital library (available in the Graduate Academic System);
⇒ Defense update protocol (issued in the system after updating the defense data – provided by the PPGCTA office);
⇒ Email addresses of committee members participating via videoconference.

All documents must be signed and emailed to the PPGCTA office (tca@ufv.br) after the defense.

Defense Procedure

At the scheduled date and time, the student must appear before the committee to defend their thesis.
The defense begins with the student presenting their work.
After the presentation, the committee members ask questions and offer feedback and suggestions.

Post-Defense Procedures (Submission of Final Version of Thesis)

Starting October 28, 2024, all thesis and dissertation submissions must be made exclusively online via the AcademicoPG system. Printed copies are no longer required.

Within 90 (ninety) days from the defense date, the student must submit the final version of the thesis directly in the AcademicoPG system.
